About Eilean Eland

WPA
I make abstract expressive ceramic sculpture with a focus on mass, volume, rhythm and movement. I am drawn to organic objects such as shells, fungi, and the female body, which together offer a vocabulary of sculptural form. References to place and mood are also incorporated. For me, the pieces are statements about the reshaping of identity.

I use hand-building techniques, coiling, pinching, cutting, drawing, twisting, and turning the clay, with oxides, under-glaze colour, glazes and texture to draw out the character of the work. I use a heavily grogged clay and fire to 1250; pieces are frequently refired until they look right.
