About John Buckley

WPA

My work consists of constructed ceramic forms, influenced by the vernacular architecture of Moorish Spain and North Africa are recurring themes in my design and three dimensional work. The concept of manipulating the natural assymetry of the architectural structures is for me a fascinating and constant challenge.

All pieces are handbuilt, slabs of clays are manipulated with the use of templates and press moulds. Bisque fired pieces are sprayed with a Copper Oxide mixture and fired in a process that bears similarities to Raku ware; where extremes of heat and strict control of the cooling process produces a subtle and elusive range of colours upon the clay surface, which becomes thoroughly integrated with the ceramic form.
