About Lesley Cooper

WPA

My preferred way of working is hand building with coiled and slabbed clay and also small moulds, which are made specifically for a piece of work. I have worked with slipware, making large coiled bowls and specialise in producing smoked ware. These have evolved into pieces that are coiled and burnished; impressed with leaves and a small disc pressed into the clay representing a moon/sun in the far distance, usually inset with lustre. The pieces are then smoked producing ‘horizon’ lines and finished with wax

I want to make a work that can be perceived as a thinly veiled landscape without representing a particular scene. It should be about perception: each piece of work can be read in different ways
