About Mary Matthews

WPA

After studying three-dimensional art at school in South Africa, I took Fine Arts at University alongside my B.A. Degree. I then came to Britain, where I used a year at Wimbledon College of Arts as a jumping- off point to gain a place in the Diploma Course for Theatrical Design at Central College of Art in Holborn…..my porcelain figures harken back to this original training!

As a mother and wife, I worked sporadically with clay; after my husband’s death in 1994, I began working with more dedication. I returned to Llandrillo College for a couple of years as a “refresher”; and now have my studio and kiln.
I handbuild figuratively and representationally in stoneware clays ( suitable for standing outside in all weathers) preferring clay colours and oxides plus the effects of different firings to colour and decorate with. Fantasy figures – (dragons, wizards etc.) are based on figurative and animal knowledge, with inspiration for decorations taken from nature.
My interest in movement is represented in figures, so the small, often porcelain figures, tend to be in action. Large figures and sculptures for the garden seem to be more still and contemplative (contrasting to the movement in water or a garden)

I love the challenge of personal commissions!
