About Sarah Holder

WPA

My interest in Ceramics began in childhood making pots with mud. I’ve attended numerous evening classes so when I emigrated to NZ I decided to work in a pottery. I found a job making slip cast planters for a couple of years. and I later achieved a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Ceramics) at Otago Polytech in Dunedin. Various other jobs including time at Kew Gardens, studying textile design, theatre prop work, wig making and voluntary museum work, together with a love of gardening have all informed my making.
I hand build freely with a general idea and let the clay dictate the ultimate form it takes. I aim for an organic form, which does not hide its materiality or the hand of the maker. I glaze to emphasize the clay’s textures and decorative surfaces.
My work is always evolving as I experiment with different materials and glazes.
