My affinity with pottery stemmed from working as an archaeological illustrator for many years, which sparked a life long enthusiasm for all good ceramics. I think there are echoes of prehistoric pottery in my work, from the forms I use to the low-fired bodies and highly burnished surfaces that are typical of my work.
I build the vessels by coiling and frequently contrast rolled or pressed rims with the burnished bodies. After bisque firing the patterning is obtained by smoke firing in sawdust, masking areas to encourage the smoke in certain directions. New forms develop through the lengthy making process but always with the goal of making highly tactile vessels that are a pleasure to handle.
