About Tania Clarke

WPA

After completing a BA (hons) at Plymouth College of Art I set up a workshop at my home in Cornwall, where the surrounding beaches and rivers influence my work. I aspire to capture characteristics of an environment in an object connecting to moments of calm contemplation when emotionally absorbed.
The pieces are hand built using traditional coiling and pinching techniques. Oxides in a white clay body produce the colours which are an integral part of the building process. I predominantly use copper, cobalt, rutile and iron. The surface is scraped to reveal the colours and patterns in the clay, then sanded after firing to create a smooth texture. Exposed internal areas are glazed which brings out the colours in the clay.
