The Westcountry Potters Association

The Association was established in 1993 and has been flourishing ever since, with over 200 members distributed throughout the south west.

We welcome everyone, professional and amateur, who shares an interest in handmade pottery and ceramic sculpture. Our aims are to increase public enthusiasm for the qualities of handmade pottery by an active programme of interesting and informative events and to provide the opportunity for the enjoyable and stimulating exchange of ideas with fellow potters at social gatherings.

Positive benefits to members include:

Prestigious exhibitions
Lectures
Workshop visits

Museum visits
Master class demonstrations
Newsletters
A Directory of Members
Discounts from pottery suppliers
Free advertising in the Newsletter

The Newsletter

The WPA Newsletter is lively and informative and includes news, views and information likely to be of interest to potters in or near the south west. Some of the main articles from each Newsletter are accessible here on this website. Click here to view the online version of our Newsletter now.

It is published bi-monthly with reviews of recent demonstrations, workshop visits and exhibitions. It is a very useful vehicle for the exchange of ideas.  Contributions from the membership are always welcomed.

WPA Events

The Association holds a variety of social and educational activities throughout the year.  These events include demonstrations, workshops and visits to potters’ studios, and are planned by the Activities Officer who welcomes ideas from the membership.

To give you an idea of the activities organised by the Association, here are some of the most recent:

Studio visit to Tim Gee (shellac-resist porcelain)

Mould-making weekend with Rod Hare

Stoneware glaze workshop with Mike Bailey

Guided tour to Imerys clay pits and production facilities, St Austell

Social firing weekend, Kingsbridge, Devon

Studio visit to Tim Hurn (woodfired saltglaze)

Studio visit to Jenny Beavan (coloured and textured porcelain)

Studio visit to John Harlow (reduction fired stoneware)

Demonstration by Kevin de Choisy (thrown and assembled earthenware)

Demonstration by Jo Connell (coloured and laminated clay vessels)

Studio visit to RAMP, (thrown decorated earthenware)

AGM demonstrations by Peter Beard (05), Blandine Anderson (06), Walter Keeler (07)

Museum visits and pot-handling sessions at Bristol, Exeter, Taunton and Plymouth

A social meal is held each year after Christmas at an arts venue such as Dartington Hall, Devon Guild or Broomhill Art Hotel, where members meet and catch up with the latest news with good food and good company.

Potters’ Market

A Potters’ Market is held each summer on the Quay at Exeter, giving members an excellent opportunity to sell their work direct to the public.  Visitors love being able to handle and buy good quality ceramics and chat to the makers.
